Miss Gay America began in at The Watch Your Hat and Coat Saloon in Nashville, TN, where Norman Jones (a.k.a. Norma Kristie) became the first-ever titleholder. Founded by Jerry Peak, the pageant aimed to celebrate the art of female illusion. After winning the title, Norman Jones purchased the pageant in , dedicating 30 years to growing it into the most prestigious and respected.
LGBTQ participation in beauty pageants has an active history in local communities around the world. This has now grown to include global pageants such as Miss Universe and Mr. Gay World.
