There were many gay writers and cast and crew members working on the show and they often had fun with Frasier and Niles having gay traits but neither character actually was in the canon of the show.

Very quickly during this most recent rewatch, I started to notice something very interesting, indeed. Namely, it really leapt out at me how queer this series was, even if on the surface it appears to be a heterosexual sitcom like so many others. Obviously, some of this has to do with the cast.

I don't believe that there's any indication that Niles is actually gay or bi. All the lines lead me to believe that being perceives as being in the closet can lead to humorous situations, rather than him being genuinely in the closet.
